Verizon may have to pay Apple $14 bil because they aren't selling enough iPhones.  Verizon is contracted to buy $23.5 bil of iPhones in 2013, but Verizon is projected to fall short by $12 bil to $14 bil this year.  So, even if nobody wants to buy the iPhones, Apple will still get paid.  Apple isn't likely to let Verizon off the hook because a lot of other wireless carriers are having trouble meeting iPhone sales numbers and if they let Verizon avoid paying then others will want to avoid paying also:

Struggling artist made a sculpture out of old comics he bought at garage sales for a comic book fan...but he didn't realize that he used an Avengers #1 issue (worth over $15,000) and at least 6 other valuable first editions. He could have made at least $30k for what he thought was just scrap paper to use as raw material for his paper mache:
