LOTD for July 10

Russia's $1.3 bil Proton rocket crashed because a critical sensor was installed upside down.  Each sensor had an arrow that was supposed to point to the top of the vehicle when it was installed, but the sensors were installed pointing down instead.  They found exactly which young technician installed the sensor upside down and he is lucky that the Siberia camps in the USSR days are gone.  The same manufacturing plant made basically the same mistake that cased a previous recent rocket failure, but still no visual control of the installation was done:

Not only was the pilot flying the Asiana plane that crashed in San Francisco a trainee making his first landing at SFO, his "trainer" had less than half of the required flight hours on the Boeing to be qualified to serve as a training, and the pilots actually told passengers to REMAIN IN THEIR SEATS after the plane crashed and was on fire.  It wasn't until a flight attendant noticed the flames that they started the evacuation process.  Standard procedure is to evacuate the plane because the assumption is that it will catch on fire!  However, these inexperienced pilots really seem to have made a series of bad decisions:

A federal judge ruled that Apple was liable for conspiring with publishers to raise e-book prices.  Apple created a pricing scheme with the top 5 book publishers and they forced Amazon to sell e-books at the higher prices.  All 5 book companies admitted their guilt and settled the charges, but Apple is still fighting this in court and will appeal:
