Google's Project Loon is looking to bring internet access to rural and remote areas via balloons.  The balloons would fly about 12 miles up and deliver 3G or faster internet speeds.  Each balloon serves 25 miles and could be a rapid way to respond to natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes:

Verizon is reportedly considering buying Canadian wireless carrier Wind Mobile.  The Canadian government wants to have at least 4 major wireless carriers serving Canada, but Wind and Mobilicity are struggling to try to become that 4th carrier.  Mobilicity tried to sell itself to one of the other Canadian carriers, but the Canadian government blocked that because they do not want market consolidation:
