LOTD for September 7

Use of psychiatric medications rose 42% for active-duty troops aged 18-34 and their spouses, a significantly higher rate than any other age group in the military health care system:

MIT scientists have created new self-assembling PV technology that can continually repair itself to avoid any loss in solar power performance.  Their molecules turn sunlight into electricity and can be repeatedly broken down and them reassembled just like how plants are constantly breaking down and reassembling them from scratch:

Michigan police are using video arraignments via portable equipments to save time and money, improve safety, and speed up the judicial process.  There is a growing trend for video arraignments from hospital bedsides, mental health facilities, local lockups and country jails:

Tweens are changing the landscape of online gaming--in 2007, 35% of boys aged 8 to 11 said that they did not play any online games, where now 91% of boys and 93% of girls aged 8 to 11 are playing online games on a regular basis:

BSNL, the only company in India that has committed to WiMAX, is rolling out WiMAX-based broadband services on a franchisee basis...but the contracts require a switch to LTE if LTE becomes successful in India.  Qualcomm is committed to using LTE in the areas it won broadband frequencies and the other spectrum holders in India still have to announce whether or not they will use LTE or WiMAX.  WiMAX can be operational earlier, but LTE may get economies of scale advantages over WiMAX...since most of WiMAX's first-to-market advantage has been squandered already:

Ericsson and Motorola have teams up to deliver LTE solutions to public safety users.  Ericsson will provide LTE equipment combined with Motorola's public-safety-optimized LTE core and Motorola will provide devices, video security and command and control solutions for first responders.  Motorola already won the $51 million contract to provide the first phase of a 700 MHz LTE network for first responders in the Bay Area:

Alcatel-Lucent completed the first data call using an LTE network operating in the public-safety 700 MHz spectrum:

Android devices now account for 25% of mobile web consumption in North America, an 18.6% increase from last year.  Apple has 56% of mobile web consumption, 11.4% down from last year and RIM is down to 9%, 1.6% lower than last year.  I'm surprised that Android is closing the gap so quickly because last year there were no iPads and iPad web usage is boosting Apple's numbers now:

The iTouch accounts for 38% of iOS sales (iPhone, iPad, iTouch), so Apple sells about 2 iTouch devices for every 3 iPhones it sells:

Steve Jobs' claim that "the iPod touch outsells Nintendo and Sony portable game players combined" appears to be far from the truth when you consider that 125 million Nintendo DS systems have been sold, more than the COMBINED sales of the iTouch, iPhone, and iPad!  Sony has sold more than 62 million PSPs, which is greater than the iTouch sales also:

Samsung may make TV sets run by the Android operating system to compete in the market for TVs that access movies, shows and games online:
