LOTD for September 16

I'm sending this from my phone so please forgive any typos.

\Article about "Retirement-gate" at Lockheed, where they wanted to streamline and reduce their overall workforce and were more successful than they had planned, with *600* executives retiring.  25% of their executives retired all at once!

Each year 90,000 people in the US die of drug-resistant "superbugs" that are resistant to normal antibiotics.  Researchers are developing the next generation of antibiotics that can overcome this type of bacteria, and they are using the mechanism beind the "superbug" bacteria to generate the antibiotics:

Supercomputer based on the human visual system may eventually allow cars to drive themselves.  The system is also to simultaneously run more than 100 billion operations per second using only a few watts (less than what a cell phone uses), where bench-top computers take 300 watts to do the same thing:

Rural broadband operator Open Range Communications was dealt probably a death blow when the FCC denied Globalstar's extension request to come into compliance with FCC rules.  This means that Open Range has no spectrum, devices that only compatible with Globalstar and not with any of their other options, and just 60 days to get new spectrum:

Positive reviews of IE9--I've switched from IE8 to FireFox, but might download IE9 if I read more positive reviews.  Microsoft showed off big-name websites such as Amazon, Facebook and Twitter that have upgraded sites designed to take advantage of IE9...and will run sluggishly without IE9:

It is pretty interesting that the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be on *all* 4 major cellular carriers.  It also has a lot of impressive features...they released pricing for the accessories but not the tablet, probably because they are still figuring out subsidies and the final pricing numbers:

Logitech will have the first Google TV device (released on 9/29) and it will cost $299...but Dish customers will pay just $179.  Google TV is said to be integrated with Dish DVRs, and it is interesting that Google is giving away 6 months of free Dish service (with Google paying for the Dish installation and equipment) to people it gives Google TVs to:

Skyhook sued Google because it says that Google interfered with its contracts with phone makers including Motorola.  Skyhook also said that Google infringes on 4 of its patents related to precision location of a smartphone by using WiFi hotspot locations instead of GPS or cell towers.  Skyhook says that Google added new requirements that caused Skyhook to be in violation of the Android licensing terms, so Motorola (and what seems like Samsung) removed Skyhook's software in favor of Google's:

Verizon is beginning a big push to get businesses to use Android phones over the Verizon network:

Verizon said that it plans to launch LTE service in 30 NFL cities later this year, basically every city with an NFL team (that would include San Diego!):

AT&T has said that it wanted to wait for the LTE market to mature before going into full-scale deployment, and now they say they will launch commercial LTE service by mid-2011 to cover between 70 million to 75 million POPs.  Verizon will cover at least 100 million POPs by the end of this year and expects to have 50-60 markets covered by the end of next year:

This is an example of reality TV going way too far...E! has a new show where brides-to-be compete in challenges to win extreme plastic surgery.  The winner each week gets to choose a plastic surgery procedure and the results are shown at the start of the next episode:

Man entered a bank in Santa Cruz, said that he had a bomb in his backpack and demanded $2,000.  The bank manager told him that he should take out a loan instead and she had him sit down while she went to "retrieve the loan paperwork."  She quickly called 911 and police arrested him:
