A new superbug from India is called a global "time bomb" because it is resistant to nearly every known antibiotic and is spreading around the world.  The worry is that the bacteria will spread through India's massive population and be easily spread throughout the rest of the world:

HP is buying security software company ArcSight for $1.5 billion.  Intel bought McAfee for $7.7 billion last month and Symantec bought Verisign for $1.3 billion in May, so there sure has been a lot of activity in this area:

China produces about 90% of the world's rare-earth metals and has cut its exports of rare-earths by 40%, which is a problem for countries who compete with Chinese manufacturers.  17 different rare-earth metals are used to produce small batteries for hybrid cards, handheld electronics, lasers, computer chips, weapons systems, etc., but Japanese companies have found ways to reduce their reliance on rare-earths.  Hitachi developed a new type of hybrid car battery that uses ferric oxide, a cheaper and easier to find alternative to the dysprosium and neodymium used today:

Google is ramping up to get their Facebook competitor ready.  They will begin introducing "layers" of social-networking features this year, probably integrating things from the bunch of social-networking-related companies they bought this summer:
