LOTD for September 14

It is nice to see that the Tech Industry added 30,200 jobs in the first half of the year--the Tech Industry is still down 210,000 jobs as compared to January 2009:

Researchers have built an artificial human ovary that can grow mature human eggs in the lab.  This could help preserve fertility for women facing chemotherapy or other treatments:

Rumor is that Apple might gets its 5th-generation iPhone baseband chipsets from Qualcomm instead of Infineon.  Intel just purchased Infineon to basically buy its way into the iPhone and iPad, as Infineon has provided all iPhone and iPad baseband chips thus far...but switching to Qualcomm does make sense if the iPhone will be coming to Verizon.  Qualcomm has a chipset that will work for LTE, CDMA/EV-DO, and GSM/UMTS, so a single iPhone could be used on basically any 4G and 3G network in the world (aside from WiMAX):

Vodafone's CEO wants the Verizon Wireless ownership issue "solved" by the end of the year.  Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless (Verizon Communications owns the rest) and they have been squeezed by Verizon Wireless not paying a dividend to Vodafone since 2005.  Verizon Wireless has paid debt instead of paying a dividend, but Verizon is running out of debt to pay.  Vodafone either wants to merge with Verizon (Verizon rejected that already), have Verizon buy out Vodafone's 45%, or start paying a dividend.  My guess is that Verizon will buy out Vodafone after Verizon Wireless' debt is paid off, as it will be easier for Verizon to borrow money then with Verizon Wireless' debt gone:

Wal-Mart launched its own wireless brand using T-Mobile's Network.  They have a really attractive deal--no contract or early termination fees, no credit check, but customers can take advantage of a family plan.  Even more interesting, the family plan can purchase buckets of data that all phones will share.  T-Mobile admits that this will undercut their own pricing, but Wal-Mart's reach and power was too much for them to ignore:
