Device developed by Sandia National Laboratories researchers that shoots a blade of water capable of penetrating steel is being sent to Afghanistan to help US soldiers to disable IEDs. The device is equally effective when placed right next to the IED or placed some distance away:

MIT engineers found a way to concentrate solar energy 100x more than a regular PV cell by using carbon nanotubes. Instead of using a whole roof to be a PV cell like today, this new technology could enable the use of little spots with tiny PV cells to generate the same or more power:
