LOTD for September 2

India has 1/3 of the world's poor and has passed into law one of the most ambitious anti-poverty programs in history.  Their government will provide nearly free food to 800 million Indians--rice, wheat, millet or other cereals each month at no more than 3 cents per pound.  Food is free to pregnant women, breast-feeding women, and children under 6 years old.  Critics say that the expensive program will drain India's budget, hurt farmers' income, and hurt India's economy:

It looks like the 3+ years of negotiations between Verizon and Vodafone are finally concluded and Verizon will buy the 45% of Verizon Wireless that Vodafone owns for $130 bil.  Vodafone will get $58.9 bil in cash, $60.2 bil in Verizon stock and $10 bil in other ways (buying out Verizon's stake in Vodafone Italia, $5 bil in notes, etc.):
