LOTD for July 19

Detroit is by far the biggest city in the US to declare bankruptcy and it is amazing to see that they have nearly *$20 bil* in liabilities and they have no money to pay their bills.  Detroit has more than 100,000 creditors...if I was a current or retired person who worked for the city of Detroit, I was be extremely scared right now because their retirement funds are about to be wiped out:

Yesterday a mother in Santa Ana was arrested for starving her 4-year-old, 18-pound daughter.  Today a mother in Santa Ana was arrested when police found her 10-year-old son chained by the ankles and crying in an apartment building courtyard:

Retired 4-star Air Force general who was in charge of both the CIA and NSA at different times says that Huawei poses an "unambiguous national security threat" to the US. He also says that Snowden's document leak is  "the single most destructive leak of American security information in our history":

23 out of 39 countries feel that China has overtaken or will overtake the US as the world's leading superpower.  The countries surveyed have a more favorable view of the US (63%) than China (50%), except for the Middle East where only 20% had a favorable view of the US.  Even our closest allies feel that the US no longer has the world's leading economy--just 33% in England and 19% in Germany:

Microsoft said in its earnings report that they are making more money from mobile phones...but a significant piece of that seems to be coming from patent royalties they get from makes of Android devices.  So, the spin that Windows Phone is driving a revenue increase may not be exactly true:

The new Nexus 7 tablet (which my older daughter has been saving her money for) appears to be going on sale on July 31.  This link has lots of photos and a lot of great information about the device:

Softbank says that more price cuts could be coming for Sprint--I think a price war could be good for US consumers:

Verizon doesn't expect many people to sign up for their new upgrade program...which doesn't surprise me because they force people into family data sharing plans and don't give a monthly service discount for people buying their own devices:

The 35-year-old mother allegedly dropped off her 4-year-old daughter at a hospital and fled, with the hospital finding that she was suffering from malnutrition and *open wounds*.  The woman has 8 other children and all have been taken out of her home:
