LOTD for July 18

This article either is way too positive about the housing market or we are in for an extended rise in home prices. Southern California's median home price rose 28% in June, a record that beat any month during the housing bubble last decade.  The prediction of a 7-year rise in home prices would be amazing if it turns out to be true...personally, I think that the market will cool off when interest prices rise:

More than 43 million people are currently living as refugees, with 3.5 million of them living in UN-provided tents that start to disintergrate after about 6 months and don't have electric power or toilet facilities.  Ikea developed a solar powered shelter than can last 10x longer than a refugee tent and cost just $1000 in mass production.  The steel frame shelters take only 4 hours to assemble, and Ikea even includes Porta potty plastic panels and solar power in that price:

The new things spreading through Japan is how people are getting plastic surgery on their palms to extend the lines of things they want to improve in their lives.  Men normally wish for business-related success lines to be upgraded (money, luck, financial, etc.) while women want to change their marriage line (if they aren't married) or change their romance line.  Doesn't plastic surgery defeat the purpse of palm reading?

At an event with Silicon Valley companies discussing what they are doing to attract the best people, Google discussed a future scenario how their leadership in the Singularity field, their hiring of Ray Kurzweil, and their building the world's most powerful computer system could lead to Google being able to offer the perk of *life extension*.  They mentioned that employees would probably never leave the company if the company could extend their lives:

AT&T is advertising that they have the most reliable LTE network, countering Verizon's appeal from their perceived network reliability edge.  AT&T claims that independent 3rd-part data found that AT&T had the highest LTE success rate...but AT&T is keeping the source of the data a secret:

Verizon is joining AT&T is trying to get their customers to pay for their smartphones without reducing their monthly service charges (T-Mobile gives that monthly reduction for their similar plan).  AT&T is letting their customers get a new smartphone after they have paid for 60% of the retail price of the phone and Verizon is only requiring customers to pay 50% of the retail price of the phone, so Verizon's deal is a little better than AT&T's deal...but T-Mobile has the best deal in this area:
