LOTD for June 7

The San Onofre power plant will be shut down for good, ending a dispute that began in January 2012 when a small radiation leak was discovered.  Hundreds of virtually new tubes that carry radioactive water were found to be damaged and Southern California Edison spent more than $500 mil on repairs since then but was not able to get approval to restart the reactors:

Stanford scientists showed that sound waves in the ocean produced by an earthquake can predict whether or not a large tsunami will be generated by the earthquake.  This could have saved a lot of lives in the Japan earthquake/tsunami in 2011 and can save many lives in the future by giving a much earlier warning to let people get to safety:

MIT neuroscientists have showen that they can block compulsive behavior in mice by activating (using light) a brain circuit  that controls compulsive behavior.  This could lead to a treatment for diseases such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourett's syndrome:

Researchers have been able to teleport information at a quantum level repeatedly, successfully every time.  Making quantum teleportation stable so that it can succeed every time is a major breakthrough:
