I guess that AT&T is giving up on acquisitions of U.S.-based carriers because they are now reportedly looking to buy a wireless carrier in Europe. AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile was rejected last year and they said last year that they would prefer to buy a U.S. carrier instead of one in Europe:

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is outselling the iPad in Japan--I never thought that Android tablets could catch up that quickly with the iPad. iPad mini shortages played a factor in reduced Apple sales, though:
