Military spending makes up a HUGE portion of San Diego's economy--$20.6 bil of direct military spending in the 2012 FY budget, with military spending generating $32 bil of gross regional product this fiscal year. Even with budget cuts overall, direct spending related to the military is still increasing in San Diego (though the growth in 2013 is projected to be just 0.4%, that is an increase where other areas have significant decreases). 1 in 4 jobs in San Diego are supported by military spending after including the "ripple effects". Military and defense is responsible for 311,000 jobs in San Diego, with another 142,000 people getting Pentagon or VA paychecks in San Diego and another 169,000 jobs in San Diego tied to military spending. San Diego's unemployment rate would be lower if they counted the 108,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel in uniform in San Diego::

Mars is now the only planet aside from Earth known to have vast reservoirs of water in its interior. Scientists found that the amount of water of the Martian mantle is significantly larger than previous estimates and is actually similar to Earth's. This raises the possibility that Mars could have sustained life:

Carbon capture and storage is a major part of the world's greenhouse gas reduction strategy...but now researchers say that the injection of massive quantities of CO2 (the current plan is for up to 3.5 bil metric tons of CO2 each year to be injected) is likely to cause earthquakes that would result in the release of the stored CO2 in the atmosphere. So, the benefit would be lost and we'd be creating earthquakes throughout the world:

Apple was fined $2.25 mil and has to pay $300k in court costs for advertising its new iPad as having 4G in Australia when it actually could only use WiFi in Australia. The judge was understandably displeased with how Apple continued to advertise the iPad as 4G in Australia even after the Australian government and others pointed out that the iPad wasn't compatible with any 4G network in Australia:

There was a HUGE outcry when a poker pro posted a photo on Twitter that showed 19 consecutive 19s showing up on the roulette wheel at the Rio casino in Vegas. It turns out that *nobody* was playing at the roulette table at the time and what was happening was just a diagnostic test being done:
