LOTD for March 14 (early edition)

Initial estimates are that the earthquake and tsunami killed over 10,000 people and have made hundreds of thousands of others homeless...but an even bigger problem is posed by the radioactive contamination from four damaged nuclear power plants that were damaged by the earthquake. More than 200,000 people living in the area were evacuated and the government is giving iodine pills to citizens.  Losing the 4 nuclear power plants also means that Japan doesn't have enough electricity being generated, so all of Japan will have rotating power outages:

The US 7th Fleet repositioned its ships and aircraft away from the FukushimaDai-Ichi  Nuclear Power Plant after detecting low level contamination in the air and on its aircraft operating in the area:

The Chinese government is considering a system that will track all 17 million people living in Beijing.  Chinese officials have become increasingly worried about how the mass protests across the Middle East could spark protests in their country. Chinese police have been turning out to prevent large crowds from forming whenever anonymous calls for mass protests are mentioned online and more than 80 activists have been placed under house arrest while other activists are missing:

The Army conducted field exercises that demonstrated the power of smartphones plugged into tactival radios, with paratroopers communicating via voice, data and images. It took just a 5-10 minute class for the soldiers to learn how to use it. Instead of yelling instructions (which anyone can hear) and running around looking for where everyone is after they get separated, they could just use their Android-based smartphones:

Sprint is giving $125 to people who switch to Sprint and get a smartphone, with people getting $50 if they switch to Sprint for a non-smartphone:
