LOTD for February 4

Recent reports that Somali-based pirates are torturing their hostages are in great contrast to reports from 2009 where pirates went out of their way to make clear that they would not hurt their hostages. If the reports of torture are true, then the international response to the pirates could become far more serious. With military actions getting increasingly successful in rescuing hostages from the pirates (for example, the US and South Korea have had prominent successes where the hostages were rescued and the pirates killed or captured), pirates taking revenge on hostages from those countries would create a very different international response to the pirates:

Verizon stopped taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4 at 8:10pm on the first day pre-orders could be made because the sales broke company sales records. In an interesting turn of events, AT&T is now making a Motorola-made Android phone (Atrix) their flagship phone in their ads to try to mitigate the damage they might take for losing iPhone exclusivity:
