LOTD for November 8

Nicaragua invaded Costa Rica, took down a Costa Rican flag and raise their own flag on Costa Rican turf last week.  However, this was not really an invasion because Google Maps mistakenly said that the territory belonged to Nicaragua...now there is a huge international incident and Costa Rica is understandable upset and embarrassed at being invaded:

Al Qaeda in Iraq tried to bring down a US-bound airplane via two kamikaze dogs.  The bombs were placed inside the dogs' bodies and they were put in kennel carriers on a flight going to the US.  The plot failed because the bombs were so poorly stitched inside the dogs that the dogs died.  If they had done their stitching better, they probably would have been able to blow up the plane because I don't think that dogs are X-rayed:

McMaster University scientists have discovered how to make human blood from adult human skin.  So, people can have blood created from their own skin to provide transfusions when they need surgery, cancer treatment, etc.  This conversion is direct and skips the step of turning the skin cells into stem cells:

Sprint says that it faces problems it Clearwire defaults on its loan arrangements, with a default at Clearwire possibly triggering a default on Sprint's bonds.  Clearwire told the SEC that its continual losses and inability to raise enough funding raises red flags about their ability to continue operating.  If Clearwire is considered a Spring subsidiary, Clearwire going down could kill Sprint.  Also, Sprint losing its 4G solution would be a major problem for its future--Sprint bet on WiMAX while Verizon/AT&T bet on LTE and T-Mobile waited to see which side would win out:

Sprint has decided to block both Huawei and ZTE from contracts for its network modernization because of national security concerns.  The DoD has openly worried about the companies' ties to the Chinese government and military, but both companies have denied their ties to the Chinese military:

The Windows Phone 7 launch appears to have been kind of a dud, with short lines and in absolutely no line at the Microsoft store in Denver:

The first spy software for the iPhone 4 has been released.  Users can silently track GPS locations, SMS messages, photos, web visits, and calls of children or employees inside a secure online control panel.  Mobile Spy runs in total stealth mode, runs in the background, and is invisible on the iPhone:

MetroPCS is sure going after the early-adopter market.  Not only was it the first to offer a dual-mode LTE smartphone, but it will have 6+ more LTE (mostly Android-based) smartphones next year.  They are also going to start voice-over-LTE trials next year:

Commentary on how netbooks have failed to take hold on wireless carriers and what that might mean for tablets.  The article points out that Apple sold 7.5 million iPads as of 9/25 but only 500,000 iPads are on AT&T's network:

Verizon Wireless cut $20/month for their unlimited data and messaging plan for current customers, basically matching Sprint's plan and shocking analysts who didn't think that Verizon would cut prices so significantly:

The JCB Toughphone is the world's first *floating* phone--the phone is fully functional after being submerged in water and making its way to the surface.  If can operate after being dragged behind a JCB GT at 120 mph, buried in 2 tonnes of rubble, and kept floating on the water for 6 hours!
