Japanese scientists are leading the Sahara Solar Breeder Project that uses the world's biggest desert (the Sahara) as an energy source.  The goal of the project is to provide 50% of the energy used by the entire world by 2050 from the solar energy it generates:

Scientists in San Francisco have discovered a potentially significant breakthrough in the prevention of Alzheimer's.  Humans wand mice with Alzheimer's have abnormally low levels of an enzyme called EphB2 in memory centers of the brain.  Improving EphB2 by gene therapy COMPLETELY fixed the memory problems of mice that had Alzheimer's before the treatment:

The EPA has officially given the mileage rating of the Chevy Volt--the electric car is rated as being capable of 93 "miles per gallon equivalent" when running on electric (electrical range is 35 miles) and it gets 37 mpg when running on gasoline.  So, its combined gas mileage rating is 60 mpg, which puts it at the top of the compact car category in fuel economy (10 mpg better than the Prius):
