LOTD for September 3

VERY interesting article about how the US could eliminate the world's dependence of fossil fuels within 3-5 years by making a big push for thorium reactors.  This would completely change the world's political equation and be a huge change for the environment.  It is interesting that thorium eats its own hazardous wastes and even acts as an eco-cleaner for waste in current nuclear reactors.  The entire world's electricity needs could be met for hundreds of thousands of years with thorium and thorium is basically FREE!  Thorium is so common in places like the US and Australia that miners treat it as a nuisance.  Thorium also cannot be used to make nuclear weapons, so everyone would just be using this for energy:

Samsung increased its sales projections from 18 million smartphones this year to 25 million smartphones.  Last year they only sold 6 million smartphones, so this is an indication that their sales are going very well!  Samsung has smartphones for both Windows 7 and bada (their proprietary platform) under development, but they say they are prioritizing their efforts to be on Android:

Apple is increasing iPad production from 1 million each month to 2 million per month, with an increase to 3 million per month later this year:
