LOTD for August 25

When I saw the Homeland Security News Wire headline today, I thought that some other researchers were doing research similar to mine...but when I clicked on the article I realized that it was an article about my company!

The most serious cyber attack on the US military's networks came from a tainted flash drive in 2008, with the malicious code placed on the drive by an unnamed country's intelligence agency.  The code spread undetected on both classified and unclassified systems, transferring data to servers under foreign control:

Article about how fish blood freezes at -0.9 C and Antarctic fish are able to keep moving at -1.8 C due to special anti-freeze proteins in Antarctic fish that work better than any household antifreeze:

Japanese high-tech toilet from market leader Toto offers an instant health check-up every time someone uses the toilet!  It analyzes urine, takes the user's blood pressure and body temperature, and measures the user's weight.  It even saves electricity on seat heating by "learning" the user's daily habits:

Study found that Android users are much more valuable to advertisers than iPhone users--Android users are 81% more likely to click on ads than iPhone users.  iPad users click on ads much more often than iPhone users, but Android smartphone users still click on ads more often than iPad users:

The Droid X and Droid 2 smartphones are scheduled to reach the end of life status in March!  Just 8 months after being released they will be gone...probably replaced by 4G versions that are much faster with more memory:

Laptop Magazine conducted a study of the battery life of Android phones and found that the Droid X and Droid 2 phones (and the Dell Streak) had the best battery life, lasting much longer than competing HTC and Samsung Android phones.  AMOLED screens seem to be a major source of battery drain:

Article about how the iPhone 4, Droid X, and HTC EVO 4G are all in short supply, with long waits to receive them online and extreme scarcity in stores.  iSuppli found that capacitors now have a manufacturing lead time of 18 weeks, well over the normal 10-12 week average.  Each iPhone 4 has 469 capacitors and even big customers like Apple cannot get components fast enough to keep up with demand.  Aluminum foil used as the conductor in capacitors is in short supply also, contributing to the delay in increasing capacitor production--they may not be able to ramp up capacitor production until next year!

Woman who accused Disney of discrimination for refusing to let her wear a Muslim head scarf while she works as a hostess at a Disneyland restaurant has refused Disney's offer for her to wear a specially designed hat instead of the hat that the hostesses normally wear at the restaurant.  Disney said that that the specially designed hat accommodates her religion and Disney costuming guidelines.  The woman refuses to accept jobs away from customers, so her lawsuit against Disney will be an extremely high-profile one:
