A study found that the Big Bang Theory and other TV shows may be actively discouraging women from going into science and engineering. The "nerd" depiction apparently is a huge negative for girls to go into those technical fields. This is especially unfortunate because women only make up 12% of engineers and more girls are needed to go into the STEM fields:
