LOTD for March 28

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg bluntly described the future of surveillance in the US...he says that within 5 years there will be police cameras on nearly every corner in New York, coupled with UAVs overhead with face recognition technology.  He acknowledge that UAVs can see into private homes, one of the many privacy concerns about this usage, but says that "you can't keep the tides coming in" and "Get used to it":

7,000 or so dental patients in Oklahoma are being told to get blood tests for hepatitis and HIV because their dentist did not properly clean his instruments.  The dentist was discovered when his patients got hepatitis B with no known risk factors...when they investigated, they found major violations such as contamination of instruments and ineffective sterilization.  He's been a dentist for 36 years but only has patient records for 6 years, so many unknown people could be in danger:

Google was granted a patent that allows Android to change the display based on the battery status of a smartphone.  So, if a phone is low on battery Android will know to reduce the power usage by disabling blur and animations between screens, even lowering the display's resolution when the battery is extremely low:

It sounds like everyone who has seen the next version of Windows has been sorely disappointed, saying that it is a minor tweak instead of the needed upgrade:
