LOTD for June 25

Groundbeaking UCLA study with the most sophisticated regional climate study ever developed shows that climate change will cause temperatures in the LA area to rise by an average of 4 to 5 F by the middle of this century, with specific climate-change predictions down to the neighborhood level.  Every season of the year in every part of our country will be warmer due to climate change, and this study lays the foundation for the LA region to confront climate change and prepare to adapt to it.  Not only will the average increase, but the number of extremely hot down will triple in the downtown area and quadruple in the valleys and at high elevations:

The Pentagon is starting to add "Mobile Armour" to the Army's Android smartphones to ensure mobile security on the battlefield.  Invincea has already tested more than 3,000 Android smartphones and tablets in Afghanistan, and the success of the project has led to a $21.4 mil contract to expand the Android program:

GM was forced to recall the Chevy Cruze, a popular model that helped GM win back small-car buyers.  This is the Cruze's *fifth* recall since it started being sold less than 2 years ago, raising a red flag about its reliability.  Of the 8 other new models that went on sale in the second half of 2010, only 2 have had recalls...and those models (Mini Countryman and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport) just had 1 recall, not 5 recalls.  This recall is important though--GM knows of at least 30 fires caused by this engine problem, with flames engulfing and destroying cars in 2 reported cases:

Typosquatters set up "doppelganger domains" to harvest emails intended for others...one such typosquatter just got sued for $1 mil by an IP protection law firm because the typosquatter set up fake email accounts to intentionally intercept private emails addressed to the firm's lawyers and staff:

It looks like Motorola Mobility successfully played defense against Apple in their patent wars. The U.S. Circuit judge denied Apple's appeal to reopen the case and he dismissed the suit with prejudice so neither side can refile.  Apple had been seeking an injunction against Motorola and had appealed the earlier decision, while Motorola was happy with the earlier stalemate, so Motorola must be quite satisfied now:

Nokia was the leading maker of cellphones and smartphones just a few years ago, but they bet their future on Microsoft's Windows Phone OS and have been rapidly declining since then.  Now when Nokia needs help from its key partner, this article points out that Microsoft pushed Nokia further into its pit of despair but announcing that its Windows Phone 8 OS will not work with Nokia's Windows Smartphone lines...which is a huge disincentive from anyone thinking about buying a Nokia smartphone now:

T- Mobile and Verizon announced that they are buying a significant portion of Verizon's AWS spectrum if Verizon gets the cable company's bandwidth. T-Mobile will get spectrum covering 60 million people in exchange for spectrum covering 22 million people and some money that they will give to Verizon. Verizon and T-Mobile will also swap licenses in a number of markets so that they will have more contiguous blocks of spectrum and re-align spectrum in adjacent markets.  That will improve operation for both of their networks--due to legacy deals, it is pretty silly how there are times where the frequencies that companies can use for their networks are are mixed together and they have to skip over frequencies and use every other or every third or fourth band...putting the bands together for each company makes a lot of sense:

Interesting article about the T-Mobile/Verizon deal discusses how T-Mobile has a leader in trying to convince regulators to reject Verizon's deal for the cable company's spectrum.  Now, T-Mobile will be for the deal, removing a major source of opposition to the Verizon/cable deal and providing another huge argument in favor of the deal:

Samsung has apparently eased their supply shortages for their new Galaxy S III smartphone and says that they will sell more than 10 million S IIIs during July:

Report says that RIM is considering splitting their business in half, with Amazon or Facebook potential buyers of their handset half and Google and Apple possible buyers of their network and messaging business:

Apple has used 30-pin ports for accessories since the third generation iPod, with hundreds of compatible devices on the market designed to use that proprietary standard.  It appears that the new iPhone and future Apple devices will have an Apple-proprietary 19-pin port instead...making all of those old accessories obsolete and forcing users to buy new accessories for their iPhone/iPad/iPod when they get a new Apple device:

Sisters came home from field day at school so sunburned that their mother rushed them to the hospital, with both sisters fair-skinned and one girl having a form of albinism that makes her particularly sun-sensitive.  Doctors recommend they re-apply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, but school rules ban sunscreen!  The school district says that Washington state law bans sunscreen due to the things in sunscreen that kids could be allergic to...but they don't consider all of the damage that exposure to the sun can cause without sunscreen!  California is the *only* state that allows sunscreen in school without a doctor's note:

Chinese soccer fan died at his home after going 11 nights without sleep because he watched every single Euro 2012 game--the time difference made all of the games on in the middle of the night in China. After he watched Italy beat Ireland, the 26-year-old man took a shower and then fell asleep...and died:
