Controversy erupted when two Japanese seismologists published a study saying that a major earthquake would hit Tokyo within the next 4 years, with other scientists saying that such predictions shouldn't be made because based on Japan's history the predictions are more likely to be wrong than right:

Computer scientists developed a wireless bicycle brake that could be used in other applications such as the European Train Service and other complex systems. Algorithms normally used for aircraft or chemical factories found that the brake works with 99.999999999997 percent reliability:

Google invested $500 mil in Clearwire in 2008...and is now dumping all of their Clearwire shares for just $47 mil. They did not explain why they taking that loss now, but it should be noted that Google has billions in cash lying around it isn't exactly like they needed the $47 mil now:

Motorola forced Apple to deactivate its push notifications for iCloud and MobileMe in Germany. This is the first time that Apple's customers have been affected directly by the ongoing endless patent disputes between Apple and its competitors, though this is limited to just one country and is under appeal now:
