T-Mobile, MetroPCS and others urged the FCC to deny Verizon Wireless' $3.9 bil purchase of spectrum from cable companies and the cross-selling deals between Verizon and the cable firms. The Rural Cellular Association said that the FCC should impose strict conditions on the deals or deny the deals. Sprint and DirecTV urged the FCC to consider the effects the deals would have on their competition. Verizon and the cable companies say that the spectrum sale is in the public interest because the cable companies aren't using the spectrum:

T-Mobile's filing with the FCC basically says that Verizon shouldn't be allowed to acquire the cable company's spectrum because Verizon doesn't need that spectrum and T-Mobile needs that 700 MHz spectrum more. T-Mobile noted that the AWS bands that the cable companies are selling what T-Mobile is using now for its HSPA+ network, and if Verizon's competitors are forced to use higher frequencies then they will have more difficult deployment requirements and less coverage inside of buildings. Is T-Mobile going to pay $3.9 bil for the spectrum or do they want to just be given it?
