LOTD for February 16

Major breakthrough in nanosurgery opens the door to new medical applications including cancer treatments. The researchers succeeded in changing the genetic material of cancer cells using their new method. They use a laser with ultra-short pulses and gold nanoparticles, which enables nanomeric-scale surgery in a precise and non-invasive fashion. This can not only change the genetic material of cancer cells, but can also slow cancer cell migration and prevent the formation of metastases:

Ink-based solar cells could lead to new low-cost solar cells that are not limited by the availability of materials:

Layering and folding technique inspired by pop-up books and origami will allow for robotic insects and other devices to be mass-produced by the sheet:

Osama Bin Laden told his children to go to Europe and America to get a good education, saying that he wanted his children to live peacefully and not live like him:

Public Safety organizations were HUGE winners in the latest budget deal in Congress--The D Block in the 700 MHz band was allocated for public safety usage, Congress committed $7 bil of federal money to build it, and public safety didn't have to give back its 700 MHz narrowband spectrum that some had wanted as an exchange for the other benefits:

LightSquared might try to exchange its 1.6 GHz spectrum licenses for spectrum that is used by the DoD for aircraft testing, so their LTE network operation would avoid any GPS interference concern. If LightSquared doesn't get the DoD spectrum, their only option is to sue the government for no letting them operate their network over their 1.6 GHz spectrum:

Clearwire is looking to go live with its TD-LTE network by June 2013, with 5,000 LTE sites in that first wave. They say that they will try to get to 8,000 LTE sites not too terribly long after their first 5,000 sites are running:

Verizon won't have to use any of its 2G/3G spectrum for its LTE network once they get the AWS spectrum from the cable companies (assuming that deal is approved). This will allow them to avoid re-engineering their currently (quite busy) spectrum for LTE, something that other providers are having to look into:

Now that its failed deal with T-Mobile is over, AT&T is reportedly actively discussing deals with Dish Network, Leap Wireless and MetroPCS to increase its available spectrum:

Apple won a significant decision in the German Courts when Motorola Mobility's Android products were found to infringe on Apple's slide-to-unlock image patent. Apple won on the 2 ways that Motorola's smartphones use but Motorola won on how their Android tablet implements its unlock technique. The German Court also had a hearing on another Microsoft case against Motorola Mobility over Motorola's Android devices, another of the lawsuits putting Android under attack:

Report found that the iPad's biggest competition during the holidays was the iPhone 4S, not the Kindle Fire or any other tablet:

Ruckus Wireless is looking to IPO soon after it gets more carrier-grade WiFi product deals. Ruckus announced two 802.11n AC-powered WiFi outdoor APs for public-access, small cell wireless, and mobile data offload services. Ruckus has apparently been profitable for the past 6 quarters and earned $120 mil in its most recent fiscal year, so their funding round was to boost their development in preparation for an IPO:

Twitter is the latest social networking company that has brought on heightened privacy concern by privacy advocates and lawmakers. Twitter admitted that using its "Find Friends" feature on iPhones and Android phones resulted in Twitter getting every phone number and email address in their address book without giving explicit permission for Twitter to do so:

A week after Path for iOS was revealed to collect and store users' contacts without user permission (while the Android version required user permission before getting that information), Apple said that it will upgrade its software so that developers can only access users' contact data after receiving explicit permission to do so:

Do we really need an toothbrush that will connect to an Android smartphone (with an iOS version coming)?  I guess this could be useful for some people since the average person brushes his/her teeth for only 46 seconds but is 50% more likely to brush for the optimal 2 minutes just by using a simple timer.  But why not get a timer instead of this $50 toothbrush that doesn't have the spinning feature that dentists recommend?

United-Continental airlines will allow customers to exchange gift cards to more than 60 stores for miles, as long as the gift cards have at least $25 credit and no expiration date. The value you get is less than if you were buying the miles directly, but this gives another option for gift cards that someone doesn't want to use:
