50 workers at the Fukushima nuclear plant have stayed on the job, risking their lives to try to save the lives of countless people they don't even know. When a Japanese official was able to contact one of the Fukushima 50, the nuclear plant worker said that he was not afraid to die, that he was doing his job. If they cannot contain the contamination threat in a few weeks, they will need to find more workers willing to go into the nuclear plant to work...getting volunteers to go into a place so dangerous that anyone within 20 miles of it was asked to evacuate!

The latest nuclear reactor designs could have possibly avoided the overheating and explosions that have been occurring at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. New designs propose the use of passive cooling systems that would not fail after a power outage, as well as other techniques to manage reactor heat:

Wave Disk Engines could be 3.5x more fuel efficient, dramatically increasing the fuel efficiency of hybrid cars while cutting automobile emissions by up to 90%. Nearly 85% of automobile fuel is wasted, only 15% of fuel is actually used by cars today, but this new generator will use 60% of fuel for fuel propulsion, 4x the efficiency! The generator is compact in size and will replace nearly 1,000 pounds of a car, so hybrid cars could be lighter and more fuel-efficient. A 25 KW prototype is supposed to be completed this year:

New report shows that $202 billion in unpaid care and $183 billion on paid healthcare was spent last year for people with Alzheimer's and dementia. Medicare and Medicaid cover about 70% of those costs, with Alzheimer's patients costing 3x more than other Medicare patients because they spend so much time in hospitals and nursing homes. By 2050, Medicare costs for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias is projected to increase nearly 600% and Medicaid costs will increase almost 400%...if the trend continues, how will the deficit ever be reduced?
