LOTD for December 9

Study found that schools can use computer-aided instruction to standardize the quality of instruction to all students, regardless of social or economic status.  The study found that some schools struggle to find enough quality teachers for their math classes and that teachers are forced to teach more content in less time.  The study found that districts can improve test scores and save money while reducing the achievement gap for at-risk students or poorer schools.  The most amazing thing to me is that computer-aided instruction enables students to learn 1.5 years of Algebra content in 1 year while saving money!

Army snipers will soon be able to hit targets from 3/4 a mile away, a far greater range than they currently have.  The new sniper rifle also has add-ons to stifle the heat and noise it gives off, which can tip off a sniper's position to an enemy:

Interesting fuel saving solution for ships--blowing air rapidly out of small holes in a ship's hull will result in bubbles that will quickly join together and coat the hull with a layer of air, which reduces drag because air has far less resistance than water.  Saving up to 10% of the fuel that ships consume could be a huge cost savings and environmental benefit.  Consumers could also save significantly because the cost of fuel is often more than half of a cargo ship's total operating expenses:

Currency-sniffing dog found $41,500 in the checked luggage of a passenger bound for Jamaica.  The money was concealed in the suitcase liner and the woman also had $1,802 in her carry-on.  The woman had declared that she was carrying just $5,000, so she gave up the $43,302 and was let go.  Travelers are required to declare amounts over $10k:

Verizon's CEO said that LTE wouldn't replace in-home cable and FiOS services, but some customers will choose LTE over wireline-based broadband services:

I find it interesting that the BCS only has 1 full-time employee and 2 part-time office assistants and is run out of someone's home:
