LOTD for September 21

Mitochondrially targeted antioxidants appear to be showing effectiveness in anti-aging in mice and they have advanced far enough that they are about to start *human* trials.  The current expected limitation of this anti-aging drug is to extend human life by a decade...though they are working to increase the effectiveness of the technique:

The greenest Marine company ever (India Company of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, based in Camp Pendleton) is about to deploy to Afghanistan, the first wave of the military's eco-push in the war-zone.  The company just completed a week of drills relying entirely on solar power.   A single soldier in Afghanistan uses 22 gallons of fuel a day, with each gallon costing between $300 and $400, and commanders in the field note the operational benefits because the huge fuel convoys are a significant security risk.  So, going green will save lives and save money:

Scientists say that the Large Hadron Collider may be on the verge of its first scientific breakthroughs, appearing to recreate at a small level the matter that existed in the first moments of the universe.  High-energy proton collisions produced unusual readings that could replicate the "hot dense matter" that would have existed microseconds after the Big Bang:

MATLAB now has support for NVIDIA GPUs, enabling engineers and scientists to increase the speed of many of their MATLAB computations without performing low-level programming.  This is a very interesting new MATLAB feature to me...

AT&T expects record smartphone sales in the 3Q of this year--not a surprise, since the iPhone 4 came out in that quarter.  AT&T says that 53% of their postpaid subscribers use a smartphone, but they expect that in the future 80% of their customers will use smartphones.  They also said that even if they wanted to improve their network quicker, they would not be able to because of component shortages:

Report that RIM will unveil its BlackBerry tablet (BlackPad) next week.  I find it interesting that the tablet will not use the BlackBerry 6 OS:
