Article about how the Navy is being held "hostage" by HP, forced to sign another $3.3 billion no-bid contract so that their networks and e-mail will work on October 1. HP is still operating under performance metrics set a decade ago, so a workstation costs the Navy $2,491 per year and only has an e-mail inbox with 50 MB (G-mail gives 7,500 MB for free)! One year of a high-end graphics workstation costs the Navy over $4k and applications cost far more than market value. The obsolete contract terms lets HP ignore security measures like hard disk encryption since they were unusual in 2000. HP charged $5 million to wipe the data from 432 compromised computers in 2008...that cost 10x more than just destroying the affected computers and replacing them with new ones!
