LOTD for June 23

Vermont officials blamed the leak of radioactive tritium on a design flaw in their 38-year-old nuclear power plant and they pumped out 130,000 gallons of contaminated water, removed 240 cubic feet of tainted soil, and spent about $10 million to contain the leak. However, while cleaning up the tritium leak, they discovered strontium (a more potent radioactive isotope that has been linked to cancer). On May 29 they revealed another leak that had 13 different radioactive substances coming from a pipe in a hole workers dug to find the source of an earlier leak! Vermont officials say that their water is safe...but I'm glad I'm not living in Vermont right now!

It appears that a remotely operated vehicle accidentally bumped into the LMRP containment cap (part of a Deepwater Horizon spill containment attempts) and closed a vent, causing more pressure inside the riser:

Breakthrough with stem cells has restored sight to dozens of people who were blinded or who suffered severe eye damage. 82 of 107 eyes were completely restored with sight and 14 others were partially cured, with benefits lasting up to a decade so far...one man was blinded more than 60 years ago and now has near-normal vision!
