LOTD for January 8

The Togo national soccer team was apparently attacked by Angolan rebels. They were on a bus traveling to a soccer tournament for countries in Africa when they stopped after being shot at with machine guns for 20 minutes. The bus driver was apparently killed immediately and some of their players and coaches were injured:

The UK and US outlined their strategies for counter-IED military operations. I like the idea that the US has formed specialized training and operations teams that are focused on counter-IED instead of just doing counter-IED when they have time:

Researchers have discovered a previously unknown mechanism that may drive the early stages of Alzheimer's, and this discovery could lead to a possible cure or even prevention of Alzheimer's:

Researchers found that the rhythm of our typing can be used to identify people and can even reveal whether or not a person is stressed. The rhythms of a person's typing style are stable over time, so it has been suggested that it could be used to verify identity or even spot early signs of Alzheimer's:

The number of solar energy patents have been rapidly increasing, with solar energy about to pass wind patents this year. The only clean energy technology area that is protejected to be ahead of solar energy is fuel cell patents:

MagicJack has a new device that allows free calls from cell phones in a home--even though the cell phone is used, no cellular minutes would be used as long as the user is at home. The devices uses *without permission* the RF frequencies that cellular carriers have paid billions of dollars for, since they say that the wireless spectrum licenses do not extend into the home. I think that the probability of a lawsuit is 100% for this...

Truphone has an Android App that allows Android phones to make free calls to Truphone, Google Talk and Skype users as long as both parties are using WiFi. The App also allows low cost calls to landlines and mobiles around the world whether they are in or out of WiFi networks:

Given reports like this, it is not surprising that Fox had to cancel this game show right before it aired on TV. Too bad for Mark Burnett and Fox, as this show was going to get HUGE ratings since it was going to air right after American Idol. Now Fox has to show a rerun after American Idol and Mark Burnett will probably stay away from the game show business:

Avatar broke more records for IMAX theaters--it is amazing that 12% of the money Avatar made in the US is from IMAX screens when IMAX only makes up 3% of the screens that are showing Avatar. Avatar is estimated to have made $67 million so far on IMAX screens--Dark Knight was the highest-grossing IMAX movie, but it made less than $70 million on IMAX...Avatar is projected to make over $200 million on IMAX:
