Study found that children in the US who were spanked had lower IQs 4 years later than those who were not spanked. They studied children around the US and the paper says that they adjusted for the socioeconomic status of the parents. They also found that the more a child was spanked, the slower the development of the child's mental ability:

Study found that 70% of teenage students who drive said they had their own cars or were the main drivers of the cars they used. The study found that the sense of entitlement about driving that those teens had led to accidents--25% of students who were the "main" driver of a car got into a car crash and just 10% of teens who shared a car got into a car crash. Even though the kids apparently drove the same amount, having to ask for the car keys helps parents monitor their kids' driving. Teens with parents that monitor their driving were 71% less likely to drive while drunk and 30% less likely to use a cellphone while driving than kids with uninvolved parents:

The results of this study really surprised me--During the Great Depression, US life expectancy actually increased 6.2 years. The study found that life expectancy declined during strong economic periods in the US. The study found that in recessions employees can work at a slower pace, sleep more, and because they have less money they spend less on alcohol and tobacco:

Worldwide airline revenue for ancillary revenue (check-in baggage charge and other new fees) totaled $10.3 billion in 2008, up 346% from 2006. This apparently has been keeping the airline industry afloat during the recession. The top 10 US airlines collected $670 million in bag fees last quarter!
