LOTD for September 17

The US plans to cancel its plans to put a missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic--this will make Russia happy and other countries in Europe nervous. Not only is losing the missile shield an unpleasant development for Poland, but the announcement came on the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939:

Former University of Tennessee professor got a 4-year jail sentence for sharing his unclassified research with foreign graduate students and taking a laptop with his research to China. This was a test case for ITAR rules and a lot of professors have watched it closely:

Researchers used gene therapy to cure monkeys of color blindness, which is the most common genetic disorder in people. Unfortunately for me, I have an extremely rare version of color blindness that shifts the spectrum of all colors so this technique wouldn't help my situation, but it should apply to almost all cases:

This study has several interesting results. For the firrst time there are more users running some variant of Firefox than not using Firefox. For the first time Skype has passed MSN Messenger as the most widely deployed IM/VoIP client software for Windows PCs. The adoption rate of OpenOffice is 50% higher in Europe and Asia than the US:

Both Verizon and Sprint have had a problem with the trackball on the BlackBerry Tour--one estimate is that nearly 50% of the BlackBerry Tours for Sprint have been returned!

Palm released their first quarter results and appears to have sold about 800k Pre phones in the quarter. Depending on how you do the accounting, Palm either made $2.8 million in profit (Palm's numbers) or lost $164.5 million (GAAP's numbers):

Woman who worked catering event for Notre Dame received a $29,387 tip in April and said she called the University's catering department three times about the payment to make sure that it was correct. After Notre Dame failed to respond to her messages, she bought a car and spent the rest. Notre Dame says that she never tried to contact them about the payment error and is now suing her:
