LOTD for July 20

Raytheon was awarded $24.4 million (which could grow to $155 million) to develop the key technology to link the various military wireless networks. This is the next generation of DARPA's Network Centric Radio System. The goal is to create unit that costs $60k each for a volume of 1,000 units:

US Special Operations Command have been using the Boeing-built Hummingbird robotic helicopters, and they are going to buy 10 more for use at undisclosed locations:

Scientists in India are looking to use India's hot chili peppers in hand grenades for use in counter-insurgency operations and riot control. The bhut jolokia is 1000x more pungent than the hot chilies used in Indian cooking, and works like a tear gas that can put its target into a semi-conscious state. The hotness of a chili is measured in SHUs, with a bell pepper rating a zero, jalapeno or Italian peperoncino under 5,000, and the bhut jolokia at 1,001,304 SHUs. Elephants have been a big threat to the India Army's camps, with elephants ignoring electrified fences...but even elephants are apparently afraid of bhut jolokia!

Budget cuts have resulted in proposals to close some UC schools or demote them from UC status...which of course has generated quite a controversy!

Big controversy over how Amazon deleted two books from Kindle devices that Kindle owners had purchased (George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984):

Last year Apple and RIM had just a combined 3% of the worldwide market share for cellular handsets, but they had 35% of the cell phone industry's profits! This year they are expected to grow their total market share to 5%, with 58% of the cell phone industry's profits. Not only are iPhones and BlackBerrys getting huge profits, their big profit margins will make it hard for others to get into the market:

Many companies are unsure if they will be applying for the $4 billion in stimulus money that was released for wired and wireless broadband in under-served areas. Large companies don't like the open access requirements and smaller operators need to find matching funds for at least 20% of the total project cost:

Both Google and Microsoft say that their operating systems will have continuous antivirus updates, meaning that no antivirus software will need to be purchased or added:

The iTouch is increasingly getting to be a more important component of Apple's offerings, sort of serving as their netbook representative and getting customers who don't want to go to AT&T:

Interesting review of Google Voice...I love that it e-mails voicemails and transcribes the voicemails and sends them as text in e-mails:

ESPN is going after sports coverage for selected cities right now, even expanding all the way to high school sports for each city. The local ad revenue is declining, a huge problem for newspapers...and now ESPN is going to compete with newspapers for that money:
