New rechargeable battery technology could give up to 10x the energy storage and be cheaper than lithium batteries...the key to its improved capacity is that it uses oxygen drawn from the air (an actual air-fueled battery!) during discharge instead of the chemicals used today--not needing the chemicals around in the battery offers more energy for the same size battery...this reduction in size and weight would be awesome for electric cars! Also, the porous carbon used is much cheaper than the lithium cobalt oxide used today:
